At the monthly member meeting of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce on January 28 at Bendillys, President Nelson introduced Greg Strauss, the internet media specialist with Rivertowns Newspaper group who gave a presenation on the latest hot topics on line.

According to Strauss, the internet is a way to touch someone you already have as a customer and to influence new customers. But, like all other media choices, you first have to decide what your goal is for your on line presence. Strauss cited statistics from the 2000 census that 74% of people today are on line. He went on to quote a Gallop reports that 48% are spending on line. He said ages 13 to 17 are spending at least one hour on line and that people 65 and older are spending one hour and over at increasing numbers.

Strauss cited several other examples of national success stories.

According to Strauss, Google searches totalled over 31 billion last year. He also said Facebook and Twitter raised 23 million for Haiti relief on line.

Strauss encouraged members to go to Google and check out your web site and see how you fare in a random search. He went on to say you can pay to get on top of the list from commercial providers or take your chances with what is available for no charge. It all comes down to who you trust.

"People want information they can use," said Strauss. He also discussed landing pages and said the surfer will take from 4 to 8 seconds on a page and the messages must give them information they can use or they bail out.

In his comments on Social media, Strauss said sites like Twitter in nothing more than a blog and is limited. He said it is good because it is a great presence, engages the public, attracts and encourages referrals. Strauss said, by dealing with friends and other people you know he asked if this would mean a higher level of trust.

When it comes to Facebook, Strauss said to make sure you set up your profile. He said you will not sell on line, but is will help in making contacts. The best you can hope for is to create some buzz about what you are doing.

As for Youtube, Strauss said there is so much you can do. Testimonials. Demonstrating products. He says it is the age of videos with 7 billion videos downloaded last year.

He urged members to put social media in their tool kit and use it in conjunction with other medias. He said in closing, "think about what you expect and re-evaluate as you go."
